Product: Pure Shot Driver
Conditions: It was a sunny afternoon with a saturated ground. Hit has rained for the past two days.
The rain finally let up today after lunch and I was able to get out to the range. I have been really excited to put the Pure Shot driver to work and see what results I would gain. I took a really long video of both using the Pure Shot and going back to my normal driver. I did not struggle with the Pure Shot as much as I thought I was. I have been hitting my driver really great lately and it showed with the Pure Shot. If I did not hit the sweet spot I was very close to it. It really didn't affect the ball as I expected too. I felt good when there was only one other person on the range, but I could have hit it with many others on the range too. Here are just a few thoughts about the club before the video.
Looks: I didn't think it was really that intimidating from the address angle. I was a bit nervous on the first shot, but after that one it didn't bother me at all. I really like the alignment aid on the top. It helped set my mind into a thought of the correct swing path. I thought that was nice. I don't know if it is the best looking driver in the world, but it works. I think I would play with a rock on the end of a stick, if it would put me in the middle of the fairway at 250 a 100% of the time.
Sound: You could tell a difference from when you hit the sweet spot compared to the other parts of the face. It has a nice ting when you hit the sweet spot. You will be able to notice it in the video.
Feel: I thought the swing weight was not way off. I think my Razar Hawk has a little bit less head weight, but that is about it. You could tell where on the face that the ball hit. You could definitely tell when you hit the sweet spot compared to off hits.
Performance: When you hit the sweet spot you really knew it. It would just rocket the ball down the range. It had a bit of spring in the face of the driver. I would like to get a high speed camera to see what happens to the convex face during impact. I wonder if it flattens out.
Here is the video:
Final thoughts:
I think this is a good training aid. It does tell you when you miss the sweet spot and when you hit it. Now does it help you with your own driver and can you do these things with out the Pure Shot. First off you can use impact tape to tell you where you hit the ball on your driver. It doesn't give you the sudden results like the Pure Shot, but you can look at the tape and see where you hit it. The Pure Shot does a better job here, giving you over exaggerated ball flights. I think when using impact tape on your regular driver, these results can be masked by forgiveness in a driver. I am not really sure how much it helped me when I went back to my regular driver. I think the one thing is that it made me focus a little bit more and that helped me hit the sweet spot on my driver more. I don't know if this would go to the course though. You have so much time and shots in between to alter this focus.
I think the advantage to this is the exaggerated miss. Impact tape doesn't give you that. Impact tape simply tells you where you hit the ball on the club face. Great. BUT it doesn't necessarily lead to corrections, or get you thinking about corrections. I guess what I'm saying is this, for me, if I used impact tape and saw that I had a slight miss on the heel that resulted in a slight fade or slice, in my head I would think "oh ok that wasn't my best swing, but I kept it in play." There is no progression there. With the Pure Shot, it forces me to be perfect or darn near it. And when I'm not, I can't talk myself into thinking a swing was acceptable.

I started off hitting my current driver with tape on it (like I said the pictures got lost). I hit 5/10 in or very close to the Sweet spot. I hit one right at the edge of the crown near the tow, one high and inside, and the rest were low. I think I may have been teeing it up too low early on.
I then moved it on to the Pure Shot. It is certainly odd feeling at first. I am playing a fairly stout shaft, and this thing is certainly not near as stiff. I took quite a few practice swings at first. It started off ROUGH. Luckily I was all alone when I started off, because the ball was going everywhere but straight. I got better as I went along, After about 25 balls I got to the point where I was hitting about 50% on or right off the sweet spot (which are the worst looking shots). It was nice getting instant feedback on where you hit the ball. I was feeling pretty confident when it was time to switch back to my normal driver.
I threw another piece of tape on there, and got up to hit my normal driver. My first one was near the middle but a HUGE BLOCK. I shook it off, and went to swing again, and once again did it again. Thats when I realized that I had slowed my tempo and swing speed way down to try to make contact with the Pure Shot. When I went to speed it back up, I missed badly for my first two. I then regrouped. Ended up hitting 4 of 10 in the middle, slightly down from my results prior to hitting the Pure Shot.
I like the idea of this training aid, like Ghsace, I think it could really give me a mental edge when standing over my normal driver. I'm just worried how much effective this can be when the shaft is so whippy. Even if it isn't the same shaft or same weight, I think it could work really well if it was close. If I could just get it in a stiff flex I think it could be effective. I am going to try to just keep swinging away at it next time, but it will be tough when it is SOOO different from my normal shaft.
I am extremely impressed with the club, I expected a very cheaply built driver, but it really is well built and gives a solid feel when hit on the platform.
I think the only reason I can hit this club successfully is because of slowing down my swing. I almost feel like I'm swinging in slow motion but after watching my video back I clearly am not. So now I'm thinking if anything this club is helping me get a good tempo on the range, which COULD be a benefit before a round. It could help me get relaxed and get started on a good tempo.
